ELIZABETH SMITH 1811 - The Scarlet Letter
Area in inches when stitched on 30 count linen 21 x 19.5
This sampler is either English or Scottish, and features a bold,
four-sided meandering carnation border. Surrounding a central
reserve with stylized forms of Adam and Eve, the serpent and the
Tree of Life.
Spot motifs included potted flowers, trees, lions, stags and
birds. The original sampler, now in a private collection, retained
is original brilliant color, reproduced here. Stitches used are
cross, counted satin and rice.
