MD 1660 THE UNICORN SAMPLER - The Scarlet Letter
From
the Victoria and Albert Museum, London Chart only $32.00
Band samplers of the 17th Century exhibit the most astonishing
variety of stitches found on samplers of any era. This is why
it is known as the Golden Age of the Sampler.
The top band of the sampler showing the Unicorn is cutwork. The
other brightly coloured bands have been stitched with Italian
and Montenegrin cross-stitch, Queen, counted satin, French knots,
double running, turkey work, detached buttonhole and back stitch.
On 40 count linen, the finished piece would measure approximately
9 x 29 stitching over three linen threads.
On 35 count linen, the finished piece would measure approximately
7 x 22 stitching over two linen threads.
This sampler is recommended for very advanced needleworkers.
