“Icelandic samplers were strictly geometric and often used circular
of polygonal frames. Having established the basic area, motifs
were then embroidered within the spaces. Subjects ranged from
flora and fauna to hunting scenes and religious icons. These samplers
were heavily influenced by Norse and Celtic imagery. Here an example
in the frequent use of intertwined knots and ropes. Equally stylized
flowers and animals are rooted firmly in the Northern European
tradition.
Similar patterns can also be seen on traditional Icelandic wall
hangings and bed covers which were worked in dyed wool.”
