Mexican samplers (dechados de Mexico) are generally more
elongated than their Spanish counterparts. They were frequently
haphazard in structure, often unfinished and were rarely ever
intended to be framed for display
.
. Early Mexican samplers featured pre-conquest motifs
such as Gods, toads, snakes and birds along with traditional scroll
patterns and diamond shapes. During the 19th century, the arrival
into the country of pattern books and Berlin patterns, resulted
in the use of non-ethnic descriptions such as lions.
