QUEEN STITCHED PANEL - The Scarlet Letter
Chart only. circa 1740
Worked on 30 count linen, the finished piece would measure approximately
10 x 10. Stitched entirely in Queen Stitch.
The original needlework panel, from which this piece was copied,
was framed in an early-to-mid eighteenth century Hogarth style
frame. Marsha has dated it to around 1740 and speculates that
its function might have been as an upholsterers sample.
It was in a superb state of preservation and is worked entirely
in Queen stitch.
The finished panel could serve as a cushion cover, a book cover,
a mirror, a box cover, firescreen panel, a purse, or a small stool
cover.
