Long Dog Samplers

OPUS MAGNUSSON [More Info]

chart only $39

“Icelandic samplers were strictly geometric and often used circular of polygonal frames. Having established the basic area, motifs were then embroidered within the spaces. Subjects ranged from flora and fauna to hunting scenes and religious icons. These samplers were heavily influenced by Norse and Celtic imagery. Here an example in the frequent use of intertwined knots and ropes. Equally stylized flowers and animals are rooted firmly in the Northern European tradition. Similar patterns can also be seen on traditional Icelandic wall hangings and bed covers which were worked in dyed wool.”

TOBASCO [More Info]

“Mexican samplers (dechados de Mexico) are generally more elongated than their Spanish counterparts. They were frequently haphazard in structure, often unfinished and were rarely ever intended to be framed for display………. ……. Early Mexican samplers featured pre-conquest motifs such as Gods, toads, snakes and birds along with traditional scroll patterns and diamond shapes. During the 19th century, the arrival into the country of pattern books and Berlin patterns, resulted in the use of non-ethnic descriptions such as lions.”

ALBION [More Info]

chart only $13

Design Area: 205 x 264

“This design has been inspired by the little known, and somewhat naïve, Norwich, (Norfolk, England), school of samplers. Some examples exist dating from the end of the 18th century to the early part of the 19th century, and are noted for their castellated hexagonal frames and extensive use of floral motifs. It is thought that this style was relatively short lived, spanning not more than half a century.”

“The Bristol Sampler style is recognized easily as originals were usually worked in red cotton thread and no corner of the material was ever wasted. The top portion consisted of a variety of alphabets, numerals and border patterns all worked in cross-stitch. As most of the children from the Bristol Orphan houses went into service, it is extremely likely that they would be required to mark household linen and therefore needed to attain high levels of workmanship and a wide repertoire of lettering styles.

For example, the Dodo, discovered in the 16th century on the island of Mauritius and extinct by the end of the 17th century, features in the design.
