A catalogue and extensive description of the Embroideries commissioned by Bess of Hardwick “The collection of late sixteenth-century embroidery, needlework and
wrought linen at the National Trust’s Hardwich Hall in Derbyshire is a
remarkable survival. Largely commissioned by the redoubtable Elizabeth,
Countess of Shrewsbury – otherwise known as “Bess of Hardwick” – the pieces
range from small panels of needlework and linen sewn with gold and coloured
silks to a dramatic set of huge wall hangings depicting “Heroic Women
of the Ancient World”. Most of the pieces were made within her household
and have subsequently remained in the charge of the Dukes of Devonshire
for over 400 years.”
Mary C. Beaudry mines archaelogical findings of sewing and needlework to discover what these small traces of female experience reveal about the societies and cultures in which they were used. Mary’s geographical and chronological scope is broad: she examines sites in the United States and Great Britain, as well as Australia and Canada, and she ranges from the Middle Ages through the Industrial Revolution.” Description from the book
