An early seventeenth century English sampler, canvas work.

An early Adam and Eve legend was a more popular theme on samplers after the early eighteenth century, which is why this earlier example is quite rare and unusual. This canvaswork design was adapted from a rather primitive grospoint canvaswork picture, showing a guilty pair in their newly profaned garden. Oversized birds, insects and animals stand transfixed around them drawing focus to their loss of innocence. Even the fearsome sun and groggy moon convey their displeasure and shock.

Stitched entirely in cross stitch with the verse in counted satin stitch.

Suitable for a beginner stitcher

Finished size on 35 count, 13-1/4"x16-3/4"
