It has been my honor to reproduce this beautiful sampler for my local Museum. We have not been able to uncover for certain, the true identity of Mary Pearson, but we do know that her sampler was handed down through one family for at least a few generations.
This sampler is not for beginners, unless they be a bit fearless. While the border and upper portion is worked with cross stitches over two, the lower scenic section has a good deal of over one stitching and some interesting specialty thread effects. I did my best to include very detailed instructions, but my feeling is that this pattern is for the sampler lovers amongst us who are willing to put in a little more effort than usual. Personally, it was the pink house and windowpane pattern on the lady's dress that drew me in, not to mention that wonderful twisted-thread snake on the Tree of Life.
The photo above (on the cover) is of the antique sampler. The photos that follow are of the model (both photos are printed in color on the book cover): |
